A Venetian Honeymoon Worthy Of Royalty

09/28/2007 01:09 p.m.

The name itself is magic and all that it needs is to be uttered and romantic notions overtake the imaginative mind: Venice. The one and only Venice. What could possibly be more romantic than taking a ride in a gondola under the Rialto Bridge or going for a leisurely stroll along the iconic 11th century Piazza San Marco on a completely regal honeymoon?

Venice is an experience that simply must be shared with the one you love, and your honeymoon activities can include browsing a selection of boutiques, galleries, museums and palazzos that can be discovered as the new couple wanders around the narrow canal sidewalks in this city that floats on the sea and is perhaps the greatest architectural marvel in the history of the world.

Travel agents can explain how a total of 409 bridges connect 116 islands to make up this unique city, and the easiest and most picturesque way to travel from one place to another is by means of a type of water bus/taxi called Vaporetti. Various Vaporetti can also take you to Torcello, Burano and Murano which are nearby islands where the couple can observe craftsmen performing tasks in the same way they did in the age of La Serenissima (The Serene Republic), when Venice controlled a wide ranging empire which made it the wealthiest city-state in the world. Much of this luxuriant opulence remains in the grand old city, and it presents honeymooning opportunities second to none.

There are so many five star luxury resort hotels in Venice that it would take years just to stay in them all and your travel agent can assist you in selecting one that is perfect for you. You can start by asking your gondoliere to dock at the Sofitel Venzia in the historic center on the Tolentini Canal, or if you really want to experience old fashioned Venetian luxury, just head for the Grand Canal and the Hotel Manin, the villa of the last Doge of the Serenissima Republic, Lucovico Manin, born in 1726. You can spend your honeymoon with your window overlooking the Rialto Bridge and just a few minutes' walk from Piazza San Marco.

If you want to go for the ultimate in Venetian decadence, then you should ask your travel agent about the Westin Europa and Regina. Located on the end stretch of Venice's Grand Canal where it broadens to become the Bacino di San Marco, The Westin Europa and Regina is situated in a position of absolute privilege, offering views which inspired the impressionist painter Claude Monet, and facing the beautiful Italian Baroque church of Santa Maria della Salute. Piazza San Marco, St. Mark's Basilica, La Fenice Opera House, and Venice's prestigious shopping area, the Calle XXII Marzo, are all just a few steps away. Composed of five 18th and 19th century historic palaces, the oldest of which belonged to the Tiepolos, the historical Venetian family that gave the city two Doges and the 17th century painter Giambattista Tiepolo, The Westin Europa and Regina offers honeymooners a sophisticated combination of palatial elegance and modern amenities to ensure that the honeymoon is more than just perfect, it is sublime!
