Berlin: Europe's New Eclectic Avant Garde Capital

09/07/2007 08:09 a.m.

Almost two decades after the Berlin Wall was torn down, the scars in this superlative city have long since healed, and the two halves have re-merged into an extremely impressive avant garde city which is quickly becoming an urban area of such cultural impact that it may eclipse London or Milan. Your travel agent can show you how you can experience the grandeur of the historical German capital in comfort and style.

One of the primary tourist sites is the location of the former Checkpoint Charlie, the legendary passage through the old Berlin Wall. You can reach this historic location by strolling to the Brandenburger Tor by way of Unter den Linden, a magnificent boulevard whose name means "under the linden trees".

Several other distinguished sights that must not be missed include the Opera House, the Berliner Dom, the Alexanderplatz, St. Hedwig’s Cathedral, the Staatsoper, the Rotes Rathaus and the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche Memorial Church. No visit to Berlin would be complete without spending some time in the sublime Neue Nationalgalerie. This New National Gallery is one of the last buildings by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and contains one of Europe's finest art collections.

Your travel agent can advise you on the best locations in the city, where you can browse the many designer boutiques and department stores as you walk down the Kurfürstendamm and Friedrichstrasse, some of the most famous avenues in Berlin. For a breathtaking view of the city, visit the Funkturm, an ultra modern tower shaped like some marvelous futuristic rocketship. If you’re in search of that perfect souvenir of your trip visit the Winterfeldtmarkt where you can choose from an assortment of arts and crafts or savor the spectacular fresh fruits and vegetables which arrive fresh from the marvelous local farms.

When in Berlin you must do as the Berliners do, therefore do not miss the culinary delights of eating Brotchen for breakfast, Bratwurst for lunch, and Zigeurner Schnitzel for dinner, all of it washed down with several large mugs of Weissbier.

Aside from the many historical sites, shopping areas, markets, works of art and architecture, Berlin is definitely well known for two things: its huge assortment of beer and some of Europe’s top DJs. Nightlife activities and partying are extremely popular, and clubs can be found in every corner of the city. Aside from parties and beer, this city has made a name for itself as one of the world’s top location for contemporary and classical music. Since the Wall fell, the city has become a magnet for young and young at heart people from all over Europe and the world, who have forged an exciting and cutting-edge urban environment quite unlike any other to be found anywhere else. Ask your travel agent today about this immensely eclectic and enthralling city.
