Why Consumer Travelers Should Use a Travel Agent (continued)

Travel Agents Can Help You Choose Your Travel Suppliers

How do you reliably know which are the best hotels to stay at? Any hotel or any hotel booking service can create an impressive looking website, but your focus is on the reality of the hotel room, where the hotel is located, the quality of the staff and services, and so on. A website doesn't necessarily tell you these things.

A travel agent can help you find reliable suppliers with the appropriate level of quality and price to match your travel preferences. Maybe they've experienced the services they're recommending themselves, and perhaps they've had other clients report back on their experiences, giving them a knowledge base from which to help you plan your travels.

Travel Agents Can Help You Book Your Trip

What happens if you arrive at your hotel or rental car depot with your Internet confirmation only to be told by the supplier that they have no record of your booking and have never heard of the Internet service you paid your money to? This is not uncommon.

The chances are, you are making your travel arrangements for your upcoming journey with suppliers and middlemen you've never dealt with before. But your travel agent has likely made similar bookings repeatedly in the past, and so knows the most reliable ways of getting your travel confirmed.

Travel Agents are a Bargain

Because travel agents get much of their income as commission from the products you buy through them, their service is in effect subsidized by the suppliers. Using a travel agent will not only save you time, but will cost you very little.

Travel Agents Can Help You Control the Quality of Your Trip

We've seen some amazing and some amusing bloopers by people booking their own travels. For example, were you planning to travel to Moscow, Idaho and bought a ticket to Moscow, Russia instead? Or maybe you got the air travel right, but booked a rental car in the wrong London (did you want London in England, or New London in CT, New England?), and is your hotel in Birmingham AL or Birmingham UK? A travel agent will make sure your bookings are in the cities you wish them to be in.

Other mistakes are more subtle. Maybe you've decided 'I don't need to book my hotel accommodation in this place' without realizing there is a major event that is filling the town at the time you'll be there. Or perhaps you've misjudged the traveling time and distance needed to drive between two places. Or maybe you're assuming the presence of something that no longer exists. The list goes on.

While not omniscient, a travel agent can pick up on many of these potential pitfalls and help make sure your travel plans match both what you expect and what is actually feasible.
