Dancing The Night Away In Helsinki

10/04/2007 09:10 a.m.

When visiting this far northern city, it would seem that the nights should be dedicated to observing the heavenly spectacle of the Aurora Borealis, yet your travel agent can advise you that visitors and residents of Helsinki would much rather spend the night time dancing at any of the Finnish capital's superlative world class clubs.

Most of the discos and night clubs are open until 4 in the morning, so the night time is definitely extensive! For reasons best known to Finns, they like to throw in tango numbers inbetween the state of the art dance beats, so don't be surprised if you get some tangoing in between your Moby and Madonna. The Finnish national passion for tango dancing can be best experienced at Vanha Maestro, on Fredrikinkatu 51-53, where you will get tango, tango and nothing but tango all night long.

Most of the best dance clubs in Helsinki are located in the area surrounding Uudenmaankatu and Eerikinkatu, so it is easy to bar hop on foot between the clubs, even when the winter night time temperatures plummet to -40 degrees! Your travel agent will certainly inform you to bring warm clothing if you're visiting Finland in winter!

Uudenmaankatu is the location for the very tony and trendy Bar 9, which is where the Helsinki elite meet. Right next door is Bar Tapasta which is a tiny bar usually filled to overflowing with a hip crowd washing down scrumptious tapas with specialty beers. Nearby Café Soda is a café by day, bar by night and nightclub after midnight. Over on nearby Eerikinkatu, Bar Corona mixes billiards with drinking and dancing and is located next door to Moskova, which is usually normally packed with youths imbibing in the bar's specialty honey vodkas. The best techno tunes in Helsinki can be found at a small bar named ConHombres which the monicker clearly identifies as a gay bar, and it's just a couple of doors down from Mother which is one of the capital city's most popular night time hangouts.

There is action to be found outside of Uudenmaankatu and Eerikinkatu as well. Nightclub DTM, Annakatu 6, is large, chaotic, gay and sizzling with hardbeat techno music. Café Tin Tin Tango, Töölöntorinkatu 7, is an extremely unique venue which features a built in launderette and sauna for really relaxing (but not chilling out). MollyMalone’s at Kaisaniemenkatu 1C, is an exciting pub in the prototypical "Irish" style, with regular live music. If you are in the mood for surroundings with a difference, RestaurantZetor at Mannerheimintie 3, will give you the opportunity to drink and dance amidst a collection of agricultural machinery. Helsinki is a phenomenal city with an equally phenomenal night life that travel agents can help you discover.
