Finding A Perfectly Ordered Urban Paradise At Munich's Arabellapark

10/12/2007 09:10 a.m.

Travel agents can inform you that Munich has a well-deserved reputation for being a boisterous party town, and that is certainly true when you visit this Bavarian city during Oktoberfest when the beer flows freely and the streets ring with the celebratory toasts of "Ein Prosit!" However, there is another and much more accurate view of the Bavarian capital which can be gained by escaping the Oktoberfest grounds with the obligatory giant pretzels and the heart shaped gingerbread emblazoned with "Ich liebe dich!" Munich is an absolutely spectacular example to the world of how a metropolis does not have to wallow in urban squalor, disorder and filth. It is a city that is clean almost ot a fault, effectively crime free, and filled with citizens who respect each other's rights and freedoms.

Nowhere in Munich is this utopian urbanity more in evidence than in Arabellapark, strangely named after Richard Strauss' famous opera of the original dysfunctional family. Your travel agent can show you that Arabellapark is easily accessible at the end of the U4 Ubahn (underground subway) and as you ride the smoothly rolling escalator to ground level, you find yourself in a location which is half modern German urban perfection and half Disneyland. Built around pedestrians, not cars, the Arabellapark area is a sequence of interlocking town squares connected by paths which wind through immaculately manicured geometrically precise parks. Restaurants, bistros, bars and other entertainment venues predominate the Arabellapark area, and most have outdoor seating where you can enjoy a local beer in far more civilized and less crowded conditions than over at the Oktoberfest grounds.

Make yourself comfortable on the plush yellow banquette in the outdoor biergarten of Farrys Bar, sip a cold Paulaner and watch the Munchenburgers ride their bicycles across the architectural perfection of Rosenkavalierplatz and the teenagers line up for a matinee of Ratatouille at the 1950s themed Cadillac Theatre, then retreat to the penthouse indoor pool and spa of the Arabella Sheraton Bogenhausen high above the Platz and watch the sky tinted in orange by the setting sun while you soak in a huge, bubbling hot Jacuzzi spa and you will realize that it is possible to find perfection in a modern city. Your travel agent can book you into the Arabella Sheraton Bogenhausen or the neighboring Arabella Sheraton Grand Hotel where you can discover for yourself how thoroughly magnificent Munich can be.
