How To Cruise Around The World On $100/Day
09/05/2007 09:09 a.m.
There are some dreams that people simply expect will never come true. One of them would be to cruise around the world, stopping off at exotic destinations, and really experiencing everything that this magnificent planet has to offer. There are 'round the world cruises available, but the prices would buy you a reasonable house. Yet there is no reason to despair, as there is a way to take about four months to go all the way around the world by ship while paying about as much as a luxury two week cruise in the Caribbean.
The answer is one that most cruisers never consider: Freighter cruising! Before you form the picture in your mind of a hammock stretched over a huge clattering diesel engine, many freighters have about a dozen cabins that are easily comparable to those in cruise ships and your travel agent can book you in one of them for about $100 a day. For about the price of a standard room at your local Holiday Inn, your travel agent can book you on a freighter where you can relax in luxury while you sail around the world!
Most freighters offer double suites and single cabins. The double suites generally consist of two rooms: a bedroom with twin beds and a separate spacious living room, giving you more than twice the space of most cruise ships. All cabins will offer private facilities with showers, VCR, TV monitor and refrigerator. Of course, the ships are fully air-conditioned, and some even feature indoor pools and saunas.
The main attraction onboard for most freighter cruisers is the complete serenity of relaxing on huge outdoor decks in complete solitude. You might be able to walk all the way around the ship and not even see another person! Most stopovers are at least two days, so that gives you plenty of opportunity to explore the spectacular, far-flung cities of the world.
You won't have 100+ item buffets to deal with, but you will be enjoying superb dining in the officer's dining room. You'll also have access to indoor decks with bars, games tables, refreshments and lots of opportunities to relax and watch the world pass by.
If your idea of cruising is to do the conga all night long with 300 of your newest friends, then freighter cruising is not for you. However, for anyone who wants a once in a lifetime experience of enjoying four months at sea in splendid peace, and stops in some of the world's most fascinating port cities on a daily rate that might not even be enough for a good dinner out, then you should ask your travel agent about freighter cruising. Bon voyage!
