Pisa: Much More Than A Leaning Tower

09/18/2007 03:09 a.m.

Pisa is perhaps most known for its Leaning Tower but there is so much more to this city which is one of the most sophisticated and culturally-conscious in Italy. One of the most beautiful squares in Europe is found here in Pisa and it is the Campo dei Miracoli or the Field of Miracles where during earlier ages many supernatural occurrences have been acknowledged to occur.

The Teatro Verdi is one the finest in Northern Italy and here you will be able to enjoy international classic performances including world class operas and some of the finest symphony orchestras you will hear anywhere. Should you feel like enjoying a wonderful stage show, the Cinemateatrolux offers a rich season of original and superlative theatrical productions.

Unlike the more inland areas of Tuscany which turn into blast furnaces in the summer months, July and August are no problem in Pisa because the cool Mediterranean can be found just five miles away, where the Versilia Coast is the most popular area to relax. Here, as in Rome, visitors can live large and make the most of La Dolce Vita. The Coast in summer is an amazing place to people watch, from the young macho boys scouting for girls while cruising on their bleating Vespas, to the middle aged industrialists who park their Mercedes S class sedans and venture out on the sands in minispeedos that leave nothing to the imagination.

For an aperitif before a very satisfying Tuscan dinner, head on over to the variety of bars at Lungarni and Piazza Garibaldi, and for a more formal yet fun experience after dining where suit and tie are de rigeur, the upscale clubs around the Piazza Cairoli await. Pisa has a large variety of bistros, live music bars, inns, pizzerias, restaurants, pubs, tavernas, clubs, discos and aperitif bars; enough to keep its many visitors happy and busy. For the best in night life action go to the area that surrounds Corso Principe Amedeo where the clubs carry on in to the wee small hours of the morning and often right through until dawn!
