Your travel agent will tell you that there is no off season for the beaches of Lanzarote, the easternmost of the glorious Canary Island archipelago. Even in January when most of Europe is shrouded in chilly gray cloud, the average temperature of these sundrenched beaches off the Western Saharan coast is above 70°F (21°C), making it perfect for enjoying the sun to its fullest extent all year long.
Many people visit Lanzarote not only for its magnificent beaches, endless sun and volcanic alien moonscapes but for twenty-four hours a day, non-stop activity, and for these action-seekers, the town of Puerto del Carmen is the place to be. It is as Playa de las Americas is to Tenerife and Playa del Ingles is to Gran Canaria, "the island hotspot" where everything is happening all the time.
During the days, the incredibly blue Atlantic Ocean off Puerto del Carmen's beaches beckons with its infinite variety of watersports and waters that are calm and safe, perfect for families with young children. Not all is placid and tranquil, though, as when the sun goes down the town offers superlative fine dining from world class gourmet restaurants such as Quintin's, Terrazza Playa, Casa Roja, La Canada and Puerto Bahia, and bashing 'til dawn at a remarkable variety of bars and clubs. With nearly 150 restaurants and night spots on the Avenida de Las Playas alone, there is always more than enough to choose from!
Puerto del Carmen offers a similarly impressive array of accommodation which your travel agent can book for you. It runs the gamut from the lavish Riu Palace Lanzarote can only be described as a state of the art palatial resort, oozing with sumptuous opulence, to the Fariones Playa which is designed with original, authentic Canarian architecture in sharp contrast to the much more modern style of the other resorts.
The shopping in Puerto del Carmen easily compares to that on its bigger and more popular sister islands further west. The town offers a wealth of places to shop from little craftsman trinket kiosks to expansive luxury boutiques featuring the finest designer labels from Paris, Milan and New York. The main concentration of shops are located on the main Beach Avenue and also in the recently built and extremely impressive Biosfera shopping center.
It has to be acknowledged that most vacationers visit for Puerto del Carmen's four miles of golden sandy beaches which proudly fly the Blue Flag of the EU as proof that they have remained sparkling and unspoiled, leading many visitors to openly express their satisfaction in surveys conducted by the local council. This very high level of satisfaction can also be credited to an extremely restrictive building policy that limits development and keep the area from becoming the typical high rise-packed beach front. The almost unparalleled 90 percent approval rating of visitors demonstrates that Puerto del Carmen is a resort unlike many others in the Canarian archipelago or beyond, and well worth consulting with your travel agent for an unforgettable visit.
