Coronation Street is a street in Weatherfield, a fictional town in Greater Manchester based on Salford. Unlike most soap operas which deal with the intrigue of moneyed bon vivants, the inhabitants of Coronation Street are typical English working class people whose multigenerational antics have kept the English speaking world enthralled and entertained for nearly half a century. One character, Ken Barlow played by William Roache, was introduced in the very first episode and is still a regular, 47 years later!
Coronation Street may be fictional but the surrounding city of Manchester the thriving, vibrant capital of Northern England steeped in history and heritage, but with an urban buzz and vitality unlike no other city in Britain. With the downtown core now completely revitalized and refreshed, Manchester deserves to be a primary stop on any tour of the United Kingdom. Travel agents can demonstrate how you can experience the very special charms of this very special city including the popular shopping and entertainment destinations of The Manchester Arndale, The Printworks, and The Triangle.
Since the first flickering black and white images appeared on United Kingdom television sets in 1960, Coronation Street has been a spectacular cultural phenomenon which has established itself at the heart of British life and through telecasts in almost every English speaking country has become the world's number one soap opera.
English speaking is an interesting point as most of Coronation Street's inhabitants speak a tight Mancusian dialect which might require subtitles in the rest of England, let alone in Canada or Australia. However, that is just part of the charm of this unique and addictive program which follows the lives of these Manchester area families and their convoluted history.
Most Britons today are as familiar with the Barlows, the Baldwins, the Platts, the McDonalds, and the Duckworths as they are with their own families, and some wags may argue that most would rather spend time with the fictional Coronation Streeters than with their own families!
Coronation Street is a full sized set on the backlot of Granada Studios in Manchester where much of the action on the show happens, regardless of wind, rain or cold. Over the years, hundreds of thousands of visitors have taken the Coronation Street tour, including Queen Elizabeth II, the Duke of Edinburgh and Prince Charles. The Prince actually appeared on the program in 2000 to mark the show's 40th anniversary. Contact your travel agent for details on how Coronation Street can be the crowning achievement of your trip to the historic city of Manchester.
