The Western Cape with its spectacular mountains has some of the most beautiful mountain Passes. Sir Lowry’s Pass: The pass was opened on 6 July 1830. The pass over the Hottentot Holland Mountains offers some awesome views over False Bay in the Indian Ocean and on the other side of the mountain the Elgin Valley with its Forests, fruit orchards, vineyards and flowers. Viljoen’s Pass: A spectacular route takes you over the Viljoen’s Pass offering a great view of the Threewaterskloof Dam. Franschhoek Pass: The pass was built along the tracks of migrating herds of game, originally known as “Olifantspad” (Elephants Path) Du Toitskloof Pass: The pass was constructed by Italian prisoners-of-war taken captive in North Africa during the 2nd world war. Hugenote Tunnel: The Hugenote Tunnel is a Toll Tunnel that extends the N1 Motorway trough the Du Toitskloof Mountains. Design started in 1973 and excavations followed in 1984. The tunnel was finally opened on 18 March 1988.
