Detailed Trip Description
The Northern Route continues to grow in popularity, with some of Ireland's best-kept secrets located in the northeast and northwest. Beginning on Ireland's west coast and ending up on the east coast in Dublin. Galway has great beaches, soaring mountains, lovely villages, fabulous pubs and some of the friendliest people in Ireland. The Gaeltacht (Irish speaking) area of County Galway offers an authentic insight into life through the Irish language, and the Aran Islands have a breathtaking beauty and an island atmosphere of their own. Donegal is located in the north west of Ireland but is still part of the Republic of Ireland. In this part of the country the landscape is known for its ruggedness yet its natural beauty with rocky islands and beautiful green valleys. Here you can visit the Cliffs of Slieve League located in west coast of Donegal. These cliffs are well known for their large drop into the Atlantic Ocean and are said to be on of the highest and finest marine cliffs in Europe. On the history side of Donegal you can take a visit to Donegal Castle that was built in the 15th Century by the O’Donnell family and has just recently been restored to its former glory. To take in the sights of Donegal in a different way, why not take a boat trip to see the burial place of Red Hugh O’Donnell and the old ruins of O’Boyle Castle. The main attraction to see in Derry would be the Derry City Walls that are located on the west bank of the River Foyle. These walls were built between 1614 and 1619 to try and keep out the local Irish rebels. Since the walls were built they have never been breached and still are perfectly preserved today and well worth a visit. Also worth a visit is the award winning Travel museum that was opened in 1992. This museum tells the story of Derry from the 6th Century right up to the present day. Dublin is an eye-catching and energetic city that has plenty to offer each individual who visits the city. If its history that you want, there is plenty to explore. From the "Book Of Kells" at Trinity College to the Tour at the Guinness Storehouse, you really are spoiled for choices! Shop along Grafton Street in the heart of Dublin’s pedestrian area where you have plenty of designer and unique shops to choose from. At night why not have dinner in one of the many Irish restaurants and pubs that line the streets, where you can sit back and enjoy live Irish music and a traditional Irish drink.
