Day 4 - Phuket

Sightseeing

This morning, embark on an incredible full day journey to explore surreal Phang Nga Bay, North of Phuket Island, in a most natural and serene way (small group join-in tour). Enjoy exploring islands by private boat and paddle sea kayaks amongst the limestone islands and caves the area is famous for.

The geology of this area is legendary – massive limestone towers rise ominously from smooth, emerald-green seas. However, the best part is hidden from the casual tourist. Hidden rooms (hongs), accessible only through narrow tidal caves, can be found inside many of these stacks. With their open-air tops and vertical, jungle enshrouded walls, they are an extraordinary geological feature. Many of these hongs were not discovered until the early 1990's. Through the efforts of our sea canoe staff, they have been maintained in a pristine state so that their exquisite natural beauty and abundant wildlife (birds and monkeys) can be enjoyed by the intrepid explorer. These unique formations also harbor beautiful, hidden, white-sand beaches and colorful coral reefs.

Day 6 - Bangkok

Sightseeing

This morning, after breakfast, meet your guide and depart on a full-day exploration of the city. First travel on the River of Kings for a visit to the Pak Klong Dalat Flower Market. Then continue to the Grand Palace, where an English governess tutored a young prince and may have influenced his powerful father. (The Thais have enormous reverence for their royal family, and both versions of The King and I are banned as an insult to one of their great rulers.) The highlight of this mind-and-eye boggling spectacle is the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, the most revered shrine in the Kingdom.

Sightseeing

Spend the afternoon exploring this exotic Eastern City by river taxi, longtail and rocket boats, along the great river and back canals of Thonburi where old Siam still survives. Imagine a child leading a mud-encrusted buffalo past a shimmering green sea of new rice, only a short distance from the gleaming skyscrapers and the bustle and boom of the early 21st century.

Sightseeing

Finish the day with a walk around Chinatown including Wat Traimit, the Gold Buddha Temple, and Pak Klong Dalat Produce Market selling mountains of flowers and vegetables.

Shopping

The evening will be free at your leisure. You might want to take a taxi to Chiang Mai's famous Night Bazaar, which is well worth a visit if you feel up to it. Although now a modern center of commerce, this market is in fact the legacy of the original Yunnanese (Chinese) trading caravans, which stopped here along the ancient trade route between China and the Burmese coast. There is a fine array of traditional, contemporary and tribal crafts on display.

Day 11 - Chiang Mai

Bicycling

This morning, enjoy a leisurely bicycle journey along the Ping River over quiet, narrow roads and through local fruit orchards, rice paddies and small villages. You will occasionally stop to visit temples, markets, traditional northern Thai houses and a local Thai school. Your ride will end at the seldom visited ruins of Viang Khum Kaam, which some consider to be the ancient city on which Chiang Mai was built. This bicycle journey is at a very gentle pace with a variety of stops. Good bikes and helmets are used, and we include technical support.

Sightseeing

After lunch at a riverside restaurant transfer back to the hotel to shower and freshen up before continuing on an afternoon exploration of the city focusing on Chiang Mai's most revered Buddhist temples and shrines including Wat Chiang Man, Wat Phra Singh, Wat Chedi Luang and Wat U Mong, a forest monastery where you have the chance to visit with a local monk.
