(The first president of the United States of America didn't live here, but George Washington's great-great-great-great-great grandfather did). A copy of Lawrence Washington's coat-of-arms - including stars and stripes - hangs in the great hall of the manor house. Was this the inspiration for the American flag two centuries later? Incidentally, the original stained glass coat-of-arms are at the nearby Fawsley Church which we will also see. Then on to Shakespeare Country, and Stratford Upon Avon, the birthplace of William Shakespeare the greatest writer of the English language. Stratford is a charming market town in the heart of rural England. There are some wonderful half wooden buildings that date back to Shakespeare’s time including the famous cottage of Anne Hathaway who married the great writer in 1582.
