Day 1 - Tahiti

Every bit as seductive as the desert island of your imagination, Tahiti was Captain Cook's gateway to French Polynesia.
Tahiti

Tahiti, the largest island throughout the country, towering over the ocean like a proud and royal Queen is appropriately crowned by a circle of majestic peaks.

The mountainous interior is adorned with deep valleys, clear streams, and high waterfalls, all bathed in green iridescence of Mother Nature's light. The coastal lands, edged with a rugged coastline, are home to fields of tropical flowers and most of the island's population.

Papeete, now the invigorating capital city and gateway of the country, boasts world-class resorts, spas, fine dining and unique restaurants, nightclubs, vibrant markets, pearl shops, and boutiques.

Tahiti Nui
Safari

Within the unpopulated and lush jungle-like interior of Tahiti Nui is an unspoiled world of towering waterfalls, deep flower-filled valleys, large lakes, and colossal green peaks rising over one mile above the valley floor. This hidden treasure of Tahiti is best explored by a guided 4X4 safari, breathtaking helicopter tour, or on a hiking trip led by a naturalist.

Stops can include spectacular waterfalls and natural pools (some in which you can swim), mountain peaks with panoramic views, archeological sites , grottos, and lava tubes.

Tahiti Iti
Hiking

Tahiti Iti is much less sparsely populated and developed than its bigger twin, Tahiti Nui. Paved roads dead-end about halfway down its north and south sides. A series of cliffs plunge into the sea on Tahiti Iti's rugged east end. While the north shore holds historical interest, the south coast has Tahiti's best beach and its top surfing spot. ------

Some main attractions include: Taravao Plateau, Tautira (where Captain Cook set anchor), the thickest barrels at Teahupoo will have you amazed at the village de surf (surfing village) where you have beachside park overlooking the big waves curling around Havaa Pass

Seductively beautiful, our Moorea packages will have you under their spell. ------

In addition to its high and scenically dramatic interior mountains, Moorea is unique among the Society Islands in having magnificent expanses of both white and black sand beaches. It is no stretch to say that the beaches of Moorea Island can be rated among the worlds finest.

The highlight of the Moorea tour is the Belvedere lookout. The Belvedere lookout offers one of the best views of Moorea, great vista of Opunohu and Cook's Bay and also the island's scenic mountain Mt Rotui. ------

Belvedere Overlook
Eco-Tourism

Moorea's most spectacular sites are seen from this easily reached overlook. Located in the center of the island, visitors marvel at the panoramic views of the twin bays and the plantations of Opunohu Valley. The overlook is a popular stop on circle-island or 4x4 tours. ------

Belvedere Overlook is considered the best place to get a panoramic mountain top view of Moorea and the south pacific. The overlook is a common place site for photographers and anyone who wants to view miles of bright blue ocean of French Polynesia. The Opunohu Valley is another must see attraction of the Tahiti Islands. The large valley in the interior of northern Moorea is the ideal place to go horseback riding and hike through lush vegetation. ------

The majestic mountains are fully accessible to everyone. By air, helicopter tours fly into canyons and along ridge tops. By road, a 4x4 ventures past plantations, across streams, into deep valleys, and up to waterfalls. By foot, guided hikes of all levels follow winding rainforest trails and up to high mountain overlooks.

Snorkelers' Haven
Snorkeling

Due to lack of strong currents, and the abundant marine life, the shallow waters around Moorea are ideal for year-round snorkeling. All ages can enjoy dozens of perfect snorkeling spots close to the resorts and around the island. Local guides will take you to snorkel among schools of gentle rays. ------

Snorkeling is quite possibly the overall favorite activity of all visitors arriving to any island of French Polynesia. At Moorea, the water is crystal clear and warm. The marine life is abundant and interesting. Simply put, this island is a snorkeler's dream. Moorea also has an abundance of coral reefs that can be explored by scuba diving and snorkeling.

Many of the hotels and pensions can furnish you with basic snorkeling gear to explore the beach right out your front door ~

I recommend that you bring your own gear ~~ for a low price of a decent new mask, fins, and snorkel, combined with relatively low space needed to carry them with you, we feel the clear waters and freedom of being able to just break out and use your own gear is well worth the effort! You avoid the shoddy gear that a hotel will provide, and thus enjoy yourself much more in your own comfortable gear.

Semi-Private Tour

Encounters with the ocean's friendliest residents are waiting at Moorea Dolphin Center at the InterContinental Resort Moorea. Here, adults swim side by side with dolphins, while children wade in the waters with them. For an educational excursion, expert guides lead dolphin-watching boat tours into the ocean to observe them in their native habitat as well. ------

You can also enjoy the Apnea program which is designed specifically for you. After an introduction to marine biology, you will observe these incredibly skilled swimmers underwater. They will parade in front of you, performing jumps and flips. Just hold on to the dolphin’s fins for an unforgettable swim. ------

If you would like to watch from afar, Encounter wild dolphins and whales on the most exciting and informative eco-tour in French Polynesia, led by marine biologist Dr. Michael Poole’s research team. Observe, learn, and photograph acrobatic dolphins, magnificent whales, and the dramatic beauty of Moorea’s translucent, blue-green lagoon.

Moorea Cuisine
Food and Dining

Moorea probably has more restaurants than any other Tahitian island besides Tahiti. Dining locations can basically be divided between the restaurants at the various hotels and pensions, and private, non-hotel related dining.

Cuisine ranges from basic island staples like fruits and fish dishes to world class French and international cuisine, prepared by a variety of chefs, some imported directly from Paris!

As with all islands in Tahiti Polynesia, the food is usually delicious, but you may have to sample different restaurants before you find one that suits your taste and budget.

LOCAL & FRENCH CUISINE ------

Understandably, many of the restaurants on Moorea feature fine French and Tahitian style cooking techniques and dishes.

Below are some of my personal favorites:

This lovely Restaurant & bar located dockside on picturesque Cooks bay. French and European cuisine along with refined Tahitian seafood & steak specialties.

Le Martinez - Dining
Food and Dining

Tahiti is in the French Polynesia area (I know I'm not telling you anything you don't know), hence there is a huge influence of French cuisine. French chefs flock to work in paradise ~ bringing a vast array of recipes, ingredients and talent to create some of the best food in the world.

After I visited Restaurant Le Martinez, I graduated from a fish student to a fish connoisseur ~ the flavor is out of control fantastic; the delicate ingredients bring out just how good and fresh the fish is. Unlike other French Cuisine, the food here is on center stage, not the chef. With that said, The French Chef/Owner Dider will personally sit you down. He takes pride in every meal, even take out!

Relax and admire the magnificent sunsets as you indulge with cocktails in this trendy bar or choose a delicious French crepe as the perfect option for a light dinner in a unique and intimate setting.

Food and Dining

Te Honu Iti or "Chez Rodger": The Restaurant with Two Names!

Just five minutes from the Club Bali Hai, Chef Roger's Te Honu Iti is its own slice of paradise. Your table on the spacious terrace overlooking Cook's Bay will be the setting of one of the most elegant and delicious meals you'll find on Moorea ... even as the lights below illuminate the vibrant fish and impressive rays swimming by hoping for a taste of freshly baked bread. You can even feed them yourself, if you wish!

Te Honu Iti's first class menu offers both the fantastic French fare you'll come to expect on the island as well as a few surprises. You'll find a selection of wine here you won't find anywhere else on the island and an excellent, fully stocked bar. The perfect atmosphere, the unflaggingly attentive service and the thoughtfully prepared food are their own reward for choosing to spend your vacation in Tahiti!

Rudy's - Dining
Food and Dining

One of the most romantic places to eat, its a must try while in Moorea. A late night candlelit dinner, Rudy's offers a perfect setting for a party of two.

This hacienda-style steakhouse is the latest creation of Tahiti-born Syd Pollack, who has started several restaurants and other projects both here and in Hawaii. This one is named for his son Rudy, who oversees the kitchen here. In addition to tender New Zealand steaks, there is fresh local seafood. I always check the specials board for the likes of parrotfish grilled and stuffed with crab, or beef in a red-wine sauce, but with island influences.

The parrot fish is the staple at Rudy's~ try it.

Nights 3-6 - Raiatea

"The Vanilla Island" - Rich aroma of vanilla lingering heavily in the air, Taha'a offers a glimpse of the traditional, tranquil life of the Tahitians.
Taha'a

THIS ITINERARY IS DESIGNED FOR TAHA'A, NOT RAIATEA

The flower-shaped island's simple beauty is charmed by soft mountain shapes and surrounded by tiny motu with bright sand beaches. In the fertile valleys cutting within the island, local farmers grow watermelon, vanilla, and copra.

Seclusion is the norm, the entire island is practically yours ~

The island of Taha'a, formerly called Uporu, shares the same lagoon as the island of Raiatea.

Taha'a is symbolically called the Vanilla Island. It is on these fertile lands that the Tahitian vanilla is cultivated to become one of the best and most fragrant one, sought after by the best Chefs around the world. Tahitian pearls are also produced in Taha'a. A few pearl farms have found their shelter in the island's pure waters.

A sojourn in Taha'a is an experience out of the ordinary. The island is blessed with lush mountains and valleys, turquoise lagoons, virgin "motu" islets. Taha'a has it all! Truly authentic, away from busy Tahiti… Fishing, vanilla, pearl farms, agriculture and tourism are part of their daily lives. There is something magical and poetic about Taha'a, and it just seems like time has stopped, allowing each and everyone to enjoy this land of beauty at their own pace.

Vanilla Plantations
Adventure

The scented air of Taha'a comes from the fragrance of vanilla pods curing in the sun. Over 80% of Tahiti's harvest of this famous spice is grown here. Plantation tours include strolling among the rows of climbing orchids and a demonstration of the pollination and curing process. ------

By foot, follow a guide along ancient footpaths including a trek to the Temehani Plateau and to the slopes of Mount Temehani to see the opening of the Tiare Apetahi flowers. ------

OR - take a 4x4 tour - Tahaa is also known as the Vanilla Island and Raiatea's sister as the two islands share a lagoon. Breathe in the heavy scent of vanilla, gaze upon the wondrous black pearl and take photos of the incredible scenery after a drive in the 4x4. End your day with a delicious meal on a motu and a boat tour of the island.

Diving/Snorkeling
Scuba Diving

Le Taha'a is surrounded by pristine waters and is located steps from an incredible coral garden. You will get up, close and personal with the teeming sea life and the most adventurous ones may experience the drift snorkel that carries you from the small reef at the edge of the islet right to the heart of the coral garden.

A favorite of all divers, the shared lagoon between the islands is rich with numbers of sites and in variety including landscapes of sea mounts, caverns, drop-offs, and famous wrecks.

The calm and secluded lagoon is home to a wide variety of reef fish and plant life. Since fish-feeding is practiced, the lagoon attracts large schools of eels, perches, triggerfish, red snappers, silver jacks, tunas, red runners, and reef sharks.

Motu
Private Tour

When you have an opportunity to visit a motu, you will find that upon leaving, your heart never does.

A motu is a little island made up of nothing but coral and it's derivatives - sand, limestone boulders etc - that have been bulldozed from the mother reef during storm waves and strong swells. ------

Any island that has a barrier reef can have them, as you can see at islands like Tahaa or Bora Bora. "There is a scientific word equivalent for motu in French, the word 'caye,'" explains Jaques Iltis. ------

Tahaa, Bora Bora and Maupiti for example have sunk much farther than the islands in the East and thus have more motu. Hoa are the shallow channels between motu that link the lagoon to the sea. ------

We can arrange a lunch set on a private islet, white sand, pristine lagoon, palm trees and a musical duo.

Nights 6 - 11 - Bora Bora

"The Romantic Island" - With a lagoon resembling an artist's palette of blues and greens, Bora Bora is love at first sight.
Bora Bora

Bora Bora island is possibly the single most famous island in all the world. The legends, mysteries, and romance associated with the words "Bora Bora" bring an almost mystical presence to the island.

Surrounded by offshore motu islets inside a protective coral necklace - the motu islets of Bora Bora are the ideal location for a Bora Bora honeymoon. -------

Romantics from around the world have laid claim to this island where the castle-like Mount Otemanu pierces the sky. Lush tropical slopes and valleys blossom with hibiscus, while palm-covered motu circle the illuminated lagoon like a delicate necklace. Perfect white-sand beaches give way to emerald waters where colored fish animate the coral gardens as they greet the giant manta rays. This could be easily be described as the center of the romantic universe, where luxury resorts and spas dot the island with overwater bungalows, thatchedroof villas, and fabled ambience. ------

Nowhere else in Tahiti says romance and adventure like Bora Bora. Graced with perfect beaches, the Bora Bora hotels in this South Seas jewel offer privacy and relaxation. Its dramatic 700-meter peaks and shimmering lagoon will quickly put you under their spell. Explore surrounding islands by outrigger canoe, snorkel its clear blue waters, or shop for pearls at one of its many chic boutiques on a Bora Bora vacation. ------

Some of the most amazing scenery lies beneath the surface of Bora Bora lagoon waiting to be discovered. The Bora Bora Lagoon is home to hundreds of dazzling tropical fish species. Hiking
Hiking

Hiking on Bora Bora is a rewarding experience because the tropical vegetation is so beautiful and there are amazing views from various vantage points. There are a few good walking trails, and as the island is small, they can be accomplished in a couple of days.

Day hiking on the island of Bora bora is wonderful, but semi-limited due to the fact that the island is relatively small. The trail system is good, but easily travelled in only a day or two of non-strenous hiking.

The mountains Pahia and Otemanu (Bora Bora's highest point) are incredible destinations and challenges for the experienced and serious hiker. ------

Valley of the Kings -

On this path, a tour guide is highly recommended to help explain what you are seeing when hiking ~

You are led along old pathways to explore the remnants of ancient villages and maraes, which were ceremonial places. You hike through fertile valleys amongst lush tropical vegetation. The guide will share information about ancestral plants, medicine and sacred trees. During the walk there are opportunities to taste fresh island fruit and coconuts, plucked straight from the trees.

4 x 4 Safari Bora Bora Tour
Safari

Bora Bora Island has a few inland roads. Most were cut by the US military during World War 2 to enable the placement of canons on strategic look-out points. These rugged roads that lead into the hills climb up steep ridges and are severely rutted in places. They are especially difficult after rain. So the inner island is only accessible by four-wheel-drive vehicles. Do not attempt to drive on these roads yourself as you may get stuck.

There are Safari Bora Bora tours that provide a thrilling scenic ride to points of interest, in specially designed Range Rovers, which can handle any road conditions. A local guide will entertain you, as well as give cultural, historical and botanical insights. On your way to explore ancient archaeological sites you will pass by lush tropical flora. The locations of World War 2 cannons that you visit will offer the best views out over the spectacular lagoon.

A great tour ~

In a comfortable air-conditioned 4x4 vehicle, tour around the island and visit some of the most breathtaking lookout points you will ever see. Venture to the interior of Bora Bora and learn about ancient Tahitian temples. Travel to the northeast side of the island and climb to lookout point for a spectacular view of the neighboring islands of Raiatea, Taha’a and Maupiti.

Lagoon Exploration
Relaxation

There are so many activities in the world's most famous lagoon that some visitors never leave the water!

There are hundreds of species of colorful neon striped and spotted fish in the warm, calm lagoon. Bora Bora has beautiful coral gardens where the largest variety of fish can be seen.

Bora Bora Island's lagoon is ringed by a necklace of sandy motus (islands) and sprinkled with other tiny ones. Fantastic Bora Bora boat excursions are the only way to see some of the magnificent Bora Bora beaches.

The shallow and clear waters allow for snorkeling from you bungalow or off the beaches anywhere around the island. ------

Another way to see the vivid coral and schools of tropical fish is a glass bottom boat.

For a faster pace, explore the entire lagoon by rented motorboat or jetski where you and a guide can skim around the island, hopping off at beaches or a tiny motu along the way for a picnic.

Shark and Ray Feeding
Group Tour

Although the idea of feeding sharks may sound somewhat ominous, it is now one of the most popular excursions in the South Pacific.

Originated on Bora Bora, your close encounter begins after you don a snorkeling mask and float in the shallow lagoon waters behind a secure rope. Docile sharks arrive in schools and are hand-fed by your guide just a few feet away. Later in the same tour, you'll stand in shallow waters as graceful rays circle the group with ballet-like movements.

A Great Tour ~

Your morning is spent on the lagoon and includes snorkeling in a coral garden, discovering a wonderful natural ecosystem, visiting the stingrays in shallow water, and a stop outside of the lagoon for observation of blacktip reef sharksAfter the tour a Polynesian lunch is served on a “motu”, private island.

Motu Tapu & Motu Picnic & Boat RIde
Private Tour

The ultimate private island escape, Motu Tapu is the most photographed isle in the South Pacific. This tiny motu, just a few hundred yards from the main island, is best described as the world's most perfect place to relax.

As you go around Bora Bora by boat, you will see many different smaller islands, or as the Tahitians call them, Motus. Most of these Motus are considered private islands, but are usually visited combined with some other resort guests.

Classic glass bottom boat ride lets you enjoy the beauty of the Bora Bora marine life without ever getting wet if you don't want to. Glide gently over various, multicolored and exotic coral and fish life. Guided by local experts, this is a very unique boat!

One of the more popular and relaxing things to do on Bora Bora island has to be enjoying a lovely picnic on one of the lagoon's outerlying chrystal white sandy beach Motu's. There are a few local business that specialize in arranging these lovely picnics and getting you to and from the motus in some unusual manners...

Great Tour ~

Premium course around the Bora bora lagoon with a stopover in a secluded local restaurant on a motu with a swimming pool, shower, toilets, etc...

The day includes an "in water" picnic, shark watching and feeding, ray touching, snorkeling, swimming, learning about the island and much more.

Lagoonarium
Relaxation

The famous Lagoonarium is always worth a trip ~ located on a narrow motu to the east of Bora Bora island and is near some of the best Bora Bora resorts. This underwater experience is like swimming inside a large aquarium. If you are too timid to snorkel in the lagoon this is a great place to start as guides help you interact with the turtles, rays, sharks and colorful tropical fish.

Helmet Dive
Scuba Diving

Among the plethora of options you have at your disposal of how you would like to explore the under the sea WITHOUT scuba gear or experience - Helmet Dive is my favorite ------

You don't even have to be able to swim for these underwater Bora Bora excursions which can be taken by anyone over 8 years old. A boat takes you to an area of the lagoon where it's not very deep and there is good coral. After putting on a weighted, water-tight helmet you can walk around the ocean floor for half an hour. The area you explore is determined by the length of the hose which pipes your oxygen. You will see beautiful coral, a variety of colorful fish and some gray rays
