Uncorking It In Cork, Ireland

10/12/2007 09:10 a.m.

By the standards of most of the cities in Europe, Cork is barely a village. However, travel agents can explain that this ancient Irish maritime port city cuts a swath across Europe when it comes to being a party town that gives even the world-renowned craic capital Dublin some very healthy competition.

Cork is inextricable from its pubs and its pubs are inextricable from Cork. In years gone by, it could have been said that if the pubs and the port were taken away from Cork there would be nothing left but an occasional statue of Saint Finbarr south of Blarney. In the staggering development sparked by the awakening of the Celtic Tiger, Cork has now become a major club capital and definitely a nightlife center to be reckoned with.

The clubs that have put Cork on the European nightlife map are Sir Henry's on South Main Street and Club FX on Lynches Street. The former is a now-legendary venue which plays everything from hot Euro-Indie to The Bee Gees. The latter is an impressive 80s-90s club stretching through two floors and is easily the most popular Irish dance spot outside of Dublin.

Henry Grattan on Grattan Street is one of the new venues that has one foot in the pub area and the other in the club concept. This nightspot is becoming famous for great live music right through the week. Ma Brown's on 56 MacCurtain Street is Cork's ultimate karaoke bar where you can join many Pop Idol wannabes every Thursday and Friday night in belting out the Top 40 favorites.

The Crystal on 21 Gilabbey Street is a city centre bar which has just undergone a major refurbishing and rocks the port town with live music and a DJ every night at the weekend. This bar goes absolutely crazy when there is a big game on and guarantees a great time at any time during any major Irish sporting events. Your travel agent can advise you as to when these events are scheduled so you can catch the experience of the games!

Nancy Spains on 48 Barrack Street is one of the most popular university bars in Cork, and that equals a plethora of drinks promotions, live music and a really good time with some fun loving students. Gorby's on Oliver Plunkett Street is another student bar where you can really rock the night away. Featuring DJs every night of the week, this venue even hosts comedy evenings and special Tuesday theme nights.

Should tasting the finest beers in the South of Eire be on your list then you can't miss out on the Franciscan Well Brew Pub on the North Mall. One of the city’s few microbreweries, it's the place to head to for live traditional music every Monday and an outdoor barbecue every Thursday, which considering that you're on Ireland's southern tip means that you're likely to get wet! Cork locals boast that they can wear the same clothes year-round, but what they don't tell you is that it's sweaters under raincoats!

No visit to Cork would be complete without a visit to The Lobby Bar on 1 Union Quay. The Lobby is always packed to the rafters with dancers and party fiends who come from all over town and around the world to enjoy their nightly live gigs and the reputation as the region's premier live music venue. Your travel agent can assist you in partying down with the locals at these very special Cork clubs.
