Warsaw: A World Of History & Tastes

09/18/2007 03:09 a.m.

Warsaw is one of the most vibrant of the cities in Europe and offers the perfect balance between a rich historical heritage and an ultramodern lifestyle. There are several spectacular palaces and castles dripping in history and heritage to visit in Warsaw including the Zamek Krolewski Royal Castle. It is difficult to believe that the entire castle was rebuilt from little more than rubble in 1984 after being completely destroyed in WWII. The Zamek Ujazdowski Castle, the Wilanow Palace, the Palac Na Wyspie (Palace on the Island) and the Palac Belweder allow you to become immersed in the mists of Polish history. Other places of interest include the Chopin Monument and the Orangerie in Lazienki Park and, surprisingly, the Pawiak Prison which is a fascinating edifice.

Choosing between kielbasy sausages and potatoes, golabki stuffed cabbage, pierogi potato ravioli and placki potato pancakes will give you a taste of old Poland, however in recent times a number of international gourmet restaurants have begun to appear in Warsaw. Some of the most innovative include Arsenal on ul. Dluga 52 where you can select from a menu of 240 Italian dishes, Le Cedre on al. Solidarnosci 61 serves up First Class Lebanese, Puszkin on ul. Swietojanska 2 which boasts the best Russian cuisine west of Moscow, Pod Samsonem on ul. Freta 3/5 where you can enjoy delicious Jewish food at reasonable prices, and even the Stash cafe II on ul. Nowogrodzka 38 which is a quaint Canadian hideaway in the middle of the Polish Capital!

Should you be inclined towards more traditional Polish fare, the Folk Gospoda on ul. Walicow 13, Restauracja Staromiejska on pl. Zamkowy 15/19, Figaro on ul. Zieleniecka 2, Tradycja on ul. Belwederska 18a and if you want a ticket to Pierogi heaven, just head to U Hopfera on Krakowskie Przedmiescie 53.

The club scenes of New York and London have nothing on Warsaw with its assortment of smoke-filled clubs and bars on ul. Walicow, ul. Wspolna and ul. Mlocinska. Warsaw definitely offers something for everyone from the bars frequented by workmen with their sawdust-covered floors to sophisticated and very elegant cocktail lounges. That is the heart of the charm of Warsaw, its unique ability to make any visitor immediately feel at home.
